Bring Your Classroom to the Garden

Discover the magic of the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden. We offer free, customized, standards-aligned field trips for students from Pre-K to University.

What is Ethnobotany?

Ethnobotany might sound like a big word, but it simply means exploring how people use plants and how plants rely on people. When your students walk our trails, they aren't just looking at flora; they are exploring Hawaiian history, Native environments, and the profound stories of Canoe (Kupuna) plants.

Morning Protocol

Every tour begins with intention. We start our mornings by honoring the land through cultural protocol before we step onto the trails.

Curriculum Aligned

Our tours integrate Science, Language Arts, and History. Let us know what you are teaching, and we will tailor the tour to meet your classroom standards.

The "Aha!" Moment

From making the connection between Wiliwili trees and the ocean, to the pride of weaving a Ti leaf lei, we foster hands-on moments of discovery.

Tailored for Every Age Group

We adapt our tours to meet your students exactly where they are. We utilize "Station Rotations" to ensure small groups get focused, hands-on learning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should my students wear and bring?

For safety and comfort, please ensure your students have:

  • Closed-toed shoes (Mandatory! The garden has rocks and sticks).
  • Comfortable clothes (shorts are great for the Kona heat).
  • A personal water bottle.
  • Sunscreen and mosquito repellent.
I have students with specific needs. How can you accommodate us?

We are here to help! When you fill out our intake request form, please utilize the "Needs of the Students / Comments" section at the very bottom. If you are feeling stressed about logistics, leave your email and phone number there, and our Education Director, Sylvia, will call you directly to organize the details.

Why are the chaperone ratios so specific?

We require specific ratios (1:7 for young kids, 1:10 for older kids) so we can utilize "Station Rotations." By breaking large groups into smaller units, we ensure every student has a safe, highly engaged, and hands-on experience with our garden staff.
